OUR HISTORY

The Dakhla Downwind Challenge was born from a dream — a dream of discovering what lay beyond the iconic Dakhla lagoon.

In 2015, Soufiane Hamaini, Morocco’s first professional kitesurfer and a pioneer of the sport in the region, gathered a small group of fellow adventurers. With the support of the Wilaya of Dakhla, they embarked on the very first downwind expedition from Dakhla to Lagouira — a journey that passed through some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the Moroccan coastline.

What started as an ambitious exploration quickly grew into an annual celebration of sport, nature, and national pride. Every year since, the Dakhla Downwind Challenge has united kitesurfers from around the world to experience the raw beauty of Southern Morocco and to commemorate the historic recovery of the province of Oued Eddahab.

Now in its 10th edition, the Challenge continues to inspire a spirit of discovery, resilience, and camaraderie — a living tribute to the adventurous soul of Dakhla.
